Why, according to the CDC, do 41 percent of American children aged 12 to 15 have fluorosis? The answer is because they have consumed too much fluoride before the age of 6. Has fluoride really been proven safe? One must note the absence of randomized controlled safety trials and the admonitions about giving it to the very young. Do the benefits of swallowing fluoride outweigh the risks? That is something that each resident of Wayland, each "patient," so to speak, must decide for himself or herself. That is the essence of informed consent and patient autonomy. Judging from the turnout on July 8, I think a more accurate title for your article would have read, "Low attendance at community fluoridation hearing." I am deeply grateful to those who decided to come and let their voices be heard. With more discussion and education, perhaps the level of interest in this important topic will increase.
