Community stands up for peace

Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, one of the Muslim students shot and killed Feb. 10 in North Carolina, was trying to raise $20,000 to go on a volunteer service trip in August to help provide dental care to Syrian students, said Dr. Ammar Ghanem, a Fort Wayne pulmonologist and an at-large member of the Syrian American Medical Society, which provides medical and dental care to refugees fleeing the war in Syria. Barakat's wife, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, who also was killed by one of their neighbors, had gone on a similar trip while the couple was engaged, but Barakat wasn't able to go at that time, Ghanem said.
