The debate over whether to increase the natural level of fluoride in Bennington's water system raises some interesting questions about our community values: Do we let scare tactics trump established science about fluoridation? Do we so readily allow distortions and misinformation about fluoridation to drive the discussion? Do we fall prey to the predictably outrageous warnings from fluoridation opponents? Do we as a community still care about the health of our children, our grandchildren, each other and still respect science in ways that attract people and businesses to come here, to live, work and establish roots? I've always thought of Bennington as a community where neighbor helps neighbor, where we come together and work shoulder to shoulder with and for each other, where we value pragmatism and the common good - the greater good - over "my, me, mine" interests.
